THE FIRST COUPLE    Back to main films listing

THE FIRST COUPLE is a romantic comedy in the tradition of Adam’s Rib and The American President. It focuses on KEN and KATE STEWART, the most popular couple to ever occupy the White House. After two successful terms, Ken is preparing to give up the White House to his vice president and sail around the world with his wife. But the VP isn’t as happily married as Ken is. His hot-tempered wife catches him cheating on the campaign trail and puts an end to his philandering by shooting him where it counts. The VP will live but his career won’t survive. The scandal sends the party into a frenzy looking for a replacement two weeks before the convention.

Kate, a brilliant and beautiful woman of 48, has seen it all and quietly maneuvers for the job. To her delight, everyone loves the idea – except her husband. Her name makes the ticket despite Ken’s objections and the games begin. A battle of the sexes erupts as they try to run the country, run a campaign and keep their marriage together. The power play peaks when Kate is elected President of the United States.

With their roles reversed, it’s a brand new world for Kate and Ken. As she assumes command of the country, he must relinquish it overnight. He goes from meeting with heads of state to meeting with girl scouts and Clifford the Big Red Dog. The transition isn’t easy as each new task seems more and more ridiculous to him. It doesn’t help that everywhere he goes, Ken hears what a fantastic job Kate is doing. The role of First Gentleman simply doesn’t fit and he decides to go on that trip around the world alone despite his wife’s objections.

It doesn’t take long before he realizes his mistake. Life without Kate is no life at all for Ken. He gets as far as Bermuda where his brother convinces him to head back home where he belongs. But Kate isn’t ready to take him back. He has fences to mend, so he decides to prove his acceptance of women as equals by resurrecting the Equal Rights Amendment. If he is going to recognize his wife as his equal, then all women should be recognized that way too. Kate finds herself falling in love with him all over again and welcomes him back home.
